What we observed after spending 3000hrs inside FMCG stores.
In the last 6 months Power Projects has spent over 3000hrs working inside and outside FMCG stores… The following is what we have discovered...
Take a step back and look at how individualised the world has become and you’ll see it play out in front of you in FMCG. Everybody wants something specific. Take coffee for example, whole milk? Trim milk? Or Oat? How about Cream?
Another example, after spending weeks working in front of drinks chillers, and in most cases physically getting the drinks for customers, it amazed me that we could go 4 hours and not get the same drink twice. Everyone wanted something different.
Did you know that some people don’t like their water cold? Being a lover of cold water, I found this this completely insane and when I asked around about it, I found that easy 50% of people I asked preferred their water room temperature.
At this point, it all became so clear…
Everybody that came into the store was able to find their unique offer.
FMCG is a complex retail environment and we’re only discussing products and offers however once you realise the extent that the successful stores (or brands) offer something to everyone you can quickly see when its not going well. So how’s your store going?
For example, do you offer a place to sit? Low seating, high seating and leaning?
Do you offer an option to pay and go but also a way of drawing customers into the store?
Hot food, refrigerated food, ambient temperature food?
Do you offer 50 different types of energy drink?
Colds drinks as well as room temp drinks? Single drinks and bulk packs?
Specialty branded products? (think high margin (yes higher than usual))
Do you cater to all types of buyer behaviour? Impulse and unplanned purchases?
Habitual buyers – repeat customers of trusted brands? (think Coffee and/or fresh food)
Price conscious buyers – Promos, Discounts and value packs.
Do you serve Kids? Teens as well as adults?
If you said yes to any of the above, the next question is; Does your store layout make the most of product visibility and brand visibility?
Power Projects has the experience to give you insights into places you can fine tune your store for greater visibility. Contact us if you want to know more.
Henry Ford is famous for saying “you can have any colour you want as long as its black”, well that philosophy is truly gone out the window and what would apply in 2025 is, “We have every colour you could possibly want.” All you have to do is make sure your customers can see it.
